| Sarah Ann Smiths Intro to Machine Quilting Class-- March 21st 9:30-3:30 $35.00
Materials List : *Glasses or reading glasses, if you use them! *Comfortable clothing, particularly a top/shirt where you can easily move your arms and that wont bind your arms and hands.
Sewing Machine Ø Should be in good working order Ø Should be able to drop or cover the feed-dogs for free-motion work Ø Bring the machine you will be using for machine quilting (not the lightest weight machine you own!) Ø and you should be comfortable using your machine Ø Walking foot for your sewing machineplease practice putting the foot on your machine (and taking it off) before class *Free-motion or darning foot for your sewing machineplease practice putting the foot on your machine (and taking it off) before class *Sewing Extension table if you have one---the larger the flat space around your machine the easier it is to machine quilt! *Instruction Manual for your sewing machineI am familiar with many major brands, but every machine is different. *FOUR pieces of white or light-colored fabric 18 x 18 inchesany light colored fabric is fine, including muslin. It should NOT have a distracting pattern to it
.it should read as a solid. They dont need to be the same fabric
use leftovers or the why did I buy that? stuff. You will be making two quilt sandwiches with these and the next item, the batting. Ironed nicely would be nice! *TWO pieces of cotton or cotton-blend batting 18x18 inchespolyester batting doesnt play nicely, so you want to stick to cotton, or wool / wool-blend if you have scraps. If you have some smaller bits, you can butt the edges together and either whip-stitch them in place or use a lightweight strip of fusible interfacing to glue them together to create a piece that is large enough for our practice quilts. *THREE or FOUR spools of cotton or polyester thread: TWO spools should provide high contrast to each other and to your top fabric; for example, if you are using muslin or white cloth, use red and blue, or fuschia and turquoise. One spool to match the backing fabric; before class, please wind at least one bobbin. If your bobbin thread also matches the top, you only need these three spools. If your backing fabric is a different color from the top fabric, bring a fourth spool that matches the top (i.e. white for white fabric, off-white/cream for muslin, etc.). Please use a good thread such as Mettler or Superior--- Coats and Clark is not, in my opinion, good thread, and usually causes headaches. For this class, please do not use rayon or metallic threads (we will discuss them, but they can be cranky and create difficulties). Marking tool(s): bring what you have. Possibilities are blue wash- *out pen, Chalkoner in a color to contrast with your fabric (ex. blue chalkoner on white fabric), Prismacolor pencil (not metallic), quilt marking pencil. *Safety pins for basting your quilt sandwich, if you have them (if not, you can use straight pins for the class) *Rulerat least 12 long and 3 inches wide. *Sewing machine needlesJeans/Denim, Sharps or Quilting needles are best sizes 10, 12 or 14whatever you have. You may get skipped stitches if you use Universal needles. *Scissors, thread snips and (sigh) seam ripper *Gloves: Optional, but recommended. My favorite thing for quilting is Machingers gloves. These work better for me than anything else I have ever tried, and I highly recommend them. Other stuff: Lined paper to take notes. UN-lined paper for doodling and scribbling. Pen and pencil for notes and for doodling. A sense of humor. Chocolate and caffeine often help <grin>!
